Geography and Climate
Somalia borders Djibouti to the northwest, Ethiopia to the west, and Kenya to the southwest. Its terrain primarily features arid and semi-arid plateaus, savannas, and northern mountain ranges. The climate is predominantly hot and dry year-round, shaped by monsoon winds, with sparse seasonal rains centered around the Gu and Deyr seasons. The Jubba and Shabelle rivers in the south provide the primary source of arable land and freshwater.
InfoPlease+ 2Demographics and Culture
The population is largely homogeneous ethnically, with ethnic Somalis comprising roughly 85% of the total demographic, alongside minority groups including the Somali Bantu and Bajuni communities. Traditional culture is deeply rooted in clan affiliations, oral poetry, Islamic traditions, and pastoralism.
WikipediaEconomy and Resources
The Somali economy relies heavily on agriculture and pastoral livestock (camels, sheep, goats, and cattle), which represent the largest share of export revenue. Remittances from the global Somali diaspora and a rapidly growing telecommunications and mobile-money banking sector also play vital roles in the national economy. Natural resources include unexploited natural gas, iron ore, gypsum, bauxite, and marine fisheries along its vast coast.
