Transcript Summary: Sen. Chris Murphy on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” (Oct. 11, 2026)
Margaret Brennan: Welcome back to Face the Nation. Joining us today is Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator, thank you for being with us this morning.
Sen. Chris Murphy: Thanks for having me, Margaret.
Brennan: Senator, I want to start with the ongoing foreign policy and national security debates on Capitol Hill. We are seeing continued division over long-term strategic posture, international aid commitments, and legislative oversight. Where do negotiations currently stand?
Sen. Murphy: Well, Margaret, the American people want stability and clear, principled leadership. What we are focused on in the Senate is making sure our foreign policy directly serves the security and economic well-being of working families at home. That means strengthening our critical alliances, ensuring transparency in our strategic spending, and avoiding unnecessary conflicts that distract from domestic priorities. The bipartisan appetite for smart diplomacy remains strong, but we have to cut through the election-year rhetoric to deliver real results.
Brennan: On the domestic front, Congress faces tight fiscal deadlines and growing public concern regarding economic resilience, border security, and judicial nominations. Is there a viable path to compromise before the upcoming legislative recess?
Sen. Murphy: Absolutely. Compromise is always difficult in an polarized environment, but neither side can afford inaction. Whether we are addressing economic security, modernizing our infrastructure, or tackling urgent border policy reforms, we have demonstrated in the past that bipartisan frameworks can succeed when members sit down in good faith. Our priority remains passing pragmatic measures that protect communities and maintain fiscal continuity.
Brennan: Senator Chris Murphy, we will have to leave it there for today. Thank you for your time.
Sen. Murphy: Thank you, Margaret.
