Suspect Arrested in Lwandle Shisanyama Massacre Investigation
Police in the Western Cape have made a major breakthrough following the deadly Lwandle shisanyama mass shooting near Strand, arresting a 32-year-old male suspect now linked to multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.
Breakthrough in the Deadly Lwandle Mass Shooting
The suspect was apprehended during a targeted police tracing operation conducted by detectives in the Lwandle area. The arrest follows the tragic incident at KwaNdelu Shisanyama on September 27, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on patrons, leaving 11 people dead and 10 others critically injured.
Serious Charges and Additional Murders Linked
The 32-year-old suspect faces an extensive list of charges in connection with violent crimes in the community:
11 counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder stemming directly from the shisanyama massacre.
3 counts of murder and 4 counts of attempted murder linked to a separate July shooting in Lwandle, where gunmen attacked individuals gathered near vehicles.
Illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In total, the accused faces 14 murder charges across the two related dockets.
Seizure of Unlicensed Firearm and Ballistics Testing
During the arrest, law enforcement officers recovered a Norinco firearm alongside six live rounds of ammunition. Preliminary police findings indicate that the weapon belonged to a deceased individual and had not previously been reported stolen or robbed. Ballistic analysis and forensic tests are currently underway to confirm whether the seized firearm matches the cartridges recovered at the crime scene.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Investigation
The suspect is appearing before the Strand Magistrate’s Court to face formal charges. South African Police Service (SAPS) detectives have confirmed that investigations remain ongoing, with specialized units actively working to identify, locate, and arrest additional accomplices involved in the massacre.
