UAAP Bans NU Assistant Coach Paul Du for Remainder of Season 89 Following Altercation with UST’s Arsenio Dysangco
MANILA, Philippines The UAAP Basketball Commissioner’s Office has suspended National University (NU) assistant coach Paul Du from all basketball-related activities for the remainder of Season 89 following a post-game altercation with University of Santo Tomas (UST) assistant coach Arsenio Dysangco.
Handshake Line Incident at Smart Araneta Coliseum
The disciplinary action stems from an incident during the traditional post-game handshake line following the UST Growling Tigresses’ 90–66 victory over the NU Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, October 10, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
According to reports and league reviews, Du delivered a forceful elbow to Dysangco as the teams crossed paths. The impact knocked the UST deputy to the floor, requiring immediate on-court medical attention before he was taken to the hospital for further assessment and later discharged. Both coaches share a long history, having previously played as teammates at Uno High School.
Scope of the UAAP Season 89 Suspension
The sanction against Du takes effect immediately and encompasses comprehensive league restrictions:
Full Tournament Ban: Covers both 5-on-5 and 3×3 tournaments across all divisions until the conclusion of the season.
Potential Additional Sanctions: The UAAP Board of Managing Directors retains the authority to review the case and apply further disciplinary measures.
Right to Appeal: National University holds the option to file a formal appeal regarding the commissioner’s ruling.
