Dan Miller Lions: Why the Detroit Lions Radio Announcer Is Trending Now

Dan Miller, the longtime radio play-by-play voice of the Detroit Lions, is trending after head coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff delivered emotional postgame tributes dedicating the Lions’ Week 6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals to him and his family.

Miller was absent from the radio broadcast booth following the passing of his wife, Cindy Miller, who died at age 63 after a battle with cancer. Detroit Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti stepped in to handle play-by-play duties on the Detroit Lions Radio Network.

Awful Announcing

Following Detroit’s 45–21 win in Arizona, Campbell opened his postgame press conference visibly choked up, announcing that the ceremonial game ball was awarded to Dan Miller:

Awful Announcing

“This ball goes to Dan Miller and his family. It was hard to hear what they went through. It’s been a tough road for Dan. This is for him. Dan is salt of the earth, and I know this has been hard. But now I know Cindy’s at peace, and we love you, Dan. Appreciate you.”

Awful Announcing

Lions quarterback Jared Goff echoed those sentiments in his postgame interview, holding back tears while discussing Miller’s impact on the franchise:

“He’s just an important piece of the culture here. He really is. His voice is Lions football, and he means a lot to us. He’s a part of our family, and I talk to him weekly. I know he’s in our hearts right now and all of our prayers.”

The Big Lead

Miller has served as the official radio play-by-play voice of the Detroit Lions since 2005 and is also the sports director at Fox 2 Detroit (WJBK). The heartfelt reactions from the Lions organization sparked an outpouring of support across social media from NFL fans and the Detroit sports community.
