Two Wildfires Continue to Burn in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as Smoke Drifts Across Region
Two separate wildfires continue to burn across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (U.P.), prompting evacuation alerts, trail closures, and air quality concerns as shifting winds push heavy smoke toward nearby communities.
Ridge Fire and Craig Lake Fire Details
The blazes, initially spotted by a Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pilot, are being fueled by unseasonably warm, dry weather and gusty winds:
Ridge Fire (Marquette County): Burning in rugged, difficult terrain north of the Dead River Basinapproximately 10 miles northwest of Marquette. The fire has scorched more than 250 acres, threatening local structures and forcing emergency personnel to issue “ready, set, go” evacuation preparations for residents along North Basin Drive.
Craig Lake Fire (Baraga County): Located north of Craig Lake State Park, this blaze has burned dozens of acres, with ground crews actively cutting containment lines to stop its spread.
Smoke Drift and Air Quality Impact
A recent shift in wind directions has pushed dense wildfire smoke southeast toward Marquette, Negaunee Township, and surrounding communities. State health and environmental officials urge residents, especially children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular issues, to take precautions:
Keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke infiltration.
Run air purifiers or set HVAC systems to recirculate indoor air.
Limit strenuous outdoor activities and exercise while smoke plumes remain visible.
Monitor local alerts from the Michigan DNR and Marquette County Emergency Management for updated evacuation notices and trail closures.
Firefighting crews from across the state remain on scene, supported by aerial drops and localized containment measures, as elevated wildfire danger persists across northern Michigan.
