William Ruto Clashes with Uhuru Kenyatta Over 2022 Poll Remarks and Political Betrayal
President William Ruto launched a scathing attack on former President Uhuru Kenyatta, branding him deceitful and labeling him a political “con man” following remarks questioning the outcome and validity of the 2022 general election.
Addressing public rallies in Ziwa, Uasin Gishu County, during a tour of the North Rift region, President Ruto directly confronted his predecessor over comments Kenyatta made suggesting Kenyans made an error during the 2022 presidential contest. Ruto accused the former head of state of breaking a long-standing political pact and undermining the administration despite years of loyalty.
Allegations of Political Betrayal
Ruto revisited their shared history under the Jubilee coalition, emphasizing that he backed Kenyatta’s presidential bids across multiple election cycles, including 2013 and 2017, only to be abandoned when it was his turn to seek the presidency.
Calling out what he termed ungrateful behavior, Ruto told crowds that Kenyatta reneged on their mutual agreements. He asserted that Kenyatta had conned him politically after benefiting from his steadfast support, only to side with opposition figures during the 2022 campaigns.
Warning to Opposition Figures
The Head of State extended a direct warning to current opposition leaders and political figures coalescing around the retired president. Ruto cautioned that anyone relying on Kenyatta’s backing risked meeting the same fate of political abandonment, arguing that someone who could turn against a close deputy would not hesitate to betray newer allies.
Ruto urged Kenyatta to embrace his retirement, cease active political meddling, and stop attempting to influence upcoming electoral contests. Defending his tenure, Ruto maintained that his government has actively stabilized the economy, tackled debt, and reformed public sectors inherited under difficult conditions from the previous administration.
