Prosecution Drops 3 Impeachment Articles vs Sara Duterte: Key Updates and Trial Impact
The House of Representatives prosecution panel has formally withdrawn three of the four impeachment articles against Vice President Sara Duterte, shifting the entire focus of the Senate impeachment trial to a single charge.
Overview of the Dropped Charges
During the resumption of the trial before the Senate impeachment court, lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro announced that the panel will no longer pursue the following charges:
Article I: Misuse of confidential funds
Article III: Bribery allegations
Article IV: Grave threats
Focus Shifts Exclusively to Unexplained Wealth
The prosecution confirmed it will solely stand on Article II, which centers on allegations of unexplained wealth.
According to the panel, this strategic move aims to streamline court proceedings, limit redundant witness testimonies, and expedite the trial. Lead prosecutors stated they believe the financial evidence and documentation already introduced under Article II are substantive and sufficient on their own to seek conviction for culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust.
The Senate impeachment court and the defense team will now concentrate their upcoming arguments and rebuttals strictly on the unexplained wealth charge.
