Major Search Launched for Fishing Boat with Three-Man Crew Missing Off the Western Isles
A major search and rescue operation is underway off the coast of the Western Isles after a fishing vessel with three crew members on board was reported missing.
Maritime authorities and emergency responders mobilized following reports that the fishing boat failed to return to port on schedule. HM Coastguard has coordinated extensive air and sea assets, deploying search and rescue helicopters alongside RNLI all-weather lifeboats to sweep waters north and west of the Hebridean archipelago.
Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Deployment
The emergency response includes:
HM Coastguard Aerial Units: Search and rescue helicopters equipped with specialized maritime radar and thermal imaging systems conducting sweeping aerial patterns over the designated search zone.
RNLI Lifeboat Fleets: Volunteer lifeboat crews dispatched from regional stations across the Outer Hebrides to navigate rough sea conditions and assist in visual sweep operations.
Commercial and Local Vessels: Broadcasting of “Mayday Relay” alerts to all shipping traffic in the North Minch and surrounding Atlantic waters, requesting merchant ships and local fishing vessels to keep a sharp lookout and report sightings.
Challenging Conditions and Critical Timeline
Search teams are contending with challenging weather, shifting sea currents, and limited visibility in the remote North Atlantic waters off the Scottish coast. Emergency coordinators are focusing their sweep patterns along the vessel’s last known trajectory, tracking drift patterns influenced by local tides.
Local island communities and fishing fleets across the Western Isles remain on high alert as rescue teams work against time to locate the three missing mariners. Coastguard operations centers continue to coordinate the mission around the clock, with further updates expected as maritime units cover the search area.
