Matthew Farwell Trial Focuses on Police Interview in Sandra Birchmore Death Case

The federal trial of former Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell turned its focus to initial police interviews and the early handling of the death investigation surrounding 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore. Farwell faces federal charges of killing a witness or victim and causing the death of an unborn child in connection with Birchmore’s February 2021 death inside her Canton, Massachusetts, apartment.

Scrutiny Over Early Police Interviews and Suicide Ruling

Testimony from investigatorsincluding Massachusetts State Police Trooper Matthew Dunne, one of the primary detectives who initially examined the scenehighlighted how authorities originally classified Birchmore’s death as a suicide. Under questioning from federal prosecutors, details emerged regarding informal and unrecorded interviews conducted with Farwell shortly after Birchmore’s body was discovered. Investigators acknowledged that during follow-up conversations with Farwell, including one held in a parking lot, officers did not take written notes.

Prosecutors emphasized gaps in the initial probe, noting that no suicide note was found in Birchmore’s apartment and that investigators did not immediately canvass neighbors, secure certain key physical items, or treat the apartment as a suspicious crime scene.

Prosecution Case vs. Defense Arguments

Federal prosecutors allege that Farwell groomed Birchmore starting when she was a 15-year-old participant in the Stoughton Police Explorers youth program and maintained a sexual relationship with her for years. According to the government, after Birchmore became pregnant and told Farwell he was the father in late 2020, Farwell went to her apartment on February 1, 2021, strangled her, and staged the scene to resemble suicide by hanging. Surveillance footage introduced in court showed a masked and hooded figure, identified as Farwell, entering Birchmore’s apartment building that evening and leaving roughly 30 minutes later. Phone records presented by prosecutors showed Birchmore’s device ceased movement before Farwell exited the premises.

Farwell’s defense team contends that while the former detective had an extramarital affair with Birchmore, he did not kill her. The defense argues that Farwell visited Birchmore to end their relationship, and that Birchmore tragically took her own life following the breakup. Defense attorneys have also highlighted that subsequent DNA testing excluded Farwell as the biological father of the unborn child.

Farwell has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The federal proceedings in Boston are anticipated to run for approximately five weeks as jurors evaluate physical evidence, timeline data, and testimony from local officers, state troopers, and forensic specialists.
