During a speech at the American Airlines Center in Dallasthe home arena of the Dallas MavericksDonald Trump addressed the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention and took a humorous detour into NBA basketball. The Times of IndiaSpeaking from the stage, he brought up the blockbuster trade that sent franchise superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. While acknowledging he was not a basketball analyst, he told the crowd that the move made little sense to him: The Times of India”I must tell you, I don’t understand the trade. That trade is not what do I know about basketball? I would say it’s not going to go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. It might go down as the worst trade in the history of sports.” The Times of IndiaHe went on to compare the deal to the Boston Red Sox trading Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919, joking that he could step in to fix it: The Times of India”Babe will always be the worst trade. But is it Luka? Maybe we could redo that trade. I redo deals all the time. We gotta redo that deal. I don’t get that deal. Some deals you understand; I understand deals. But that one I didn’t quite get.” The Times of IndiaThe comments drew loud laughter and applause from the Dallas audience, tapping into the lingering frustration and disbelief among local fans over the Mavericks parting ways with their generational talent.
