A survey by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) revealed that patients in NHS hospitals suffered from severe deterioration, increased deaths, and unsafe conditions during the summer heatwaves. Nursing staff reported stifling atmospheres inside wards that lacked adequate cooling or air conditioning, with one children’s ward reaching 44C.

Among the distressing testimonies shared by nurses were cancer patients visibly sweating and dripping during chemotherapy treatments, newborn babies experiencing increased respiratory distress, and frail patients whose deaths were directly impacted by the extreme heat. One palliative care nurse reported that a patient’s chronic ulcers festered during a heatwave and were found to contain maggots. Additionally, freedom of information figures indicated that over 1,000 operations were cancelled due to the heat, prompting the RCN to call for urgent, long-term government investment to equip hospitals and care settings with proper cooling facilities.
