Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has sent a letter to Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor and the school board accusing a Pine View School history teacher, Liz Ballard, of harassing and attempting to cancel an eighth-grade student over his conservative political views.

According to the letter, the teacher repeatedly brought up political topics in class in defiance of the student’s parents, who had expressly forbidden him from participating. The teacher allegedly singled out the student to act as the conservative perspective, labeled him a “misogynist,” spread that characterization around the school, and openly questioned the suitability and influence of his father.

Uthmeier stated that if the allegations are true, the teacher violated Florida law, school board policy, and multiple ethical principles, and he argued that she should be fired and have her educator certificate revoked. The attorney general’s office gave the school district an October 1 deadline to provide an update on actions taken regarding the situation. Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor acknowledged receiving the letter, stating that the district takes the concerns seriously and will examine the facts and records while ensuring a fair process.
