Two elderly Cuban nationals, Cesar Valdes (89) and Magdaleno Medina (73), were arrested in Miami and accused of armed drug trafficking after authorities discovered they had been living in the United States illegally for more than 45 years.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and court records, the investigation began when Miami police used an undercover officer to purchase cocaine from Medina. Law enforcement subsequently executed a narcotics search warrant at a trailer where both men were located, recovering quantities of cocaine and marijuana, ammunition, stolen firearms, and over $4,800 in cash.
Investigators stated that both men entered the U.S. without inspection near Key West, Florida, in May 1980. Records indicate that Medina has four prior felony convictions related to cocaine smuggling and drug trafficking, and he received a final order of exclusion from an immigration judge in 1996. Valdes also has prior charges in Miami-Dade County from the 1980s and 1990s and received a final order of exclusion in 1993.
Medina currently faces multiple felony charges, including cocaine trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, while Valdes faces several similar drug- and firearm-related charges. Both men are being held in a Miami jail with ICE detainers and have pleaded not guilty.
