Ambani: The story behind this trend in Social Media today
08-10-2026
The Ambani name is trending today because of a public clash over Starlink’s delayed entry into India.Elon Musk posted that Starlink is being blocked by certain oligarchs who want to keep a monopolistic hold on Indian telecom, and he invited readers to guess who he meant. The comments were widely read as aimed at Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Bharti Airtel, the two private operators that dominate the market. He later asked directly whether Ambani is the real boss of India, after saying Starlink had spent years meeting Indian rules and still lacked permission to operate. He called the delay a crime against people who still lack reliable internet.India’s communications ministry rejected the charge without naming Musk. It said a social-media post claiming discriminatory treatment was baseless, that the satellite-communications rules are fair and non-discriminatory, and that three applicantsStarlink, Jio’s satellite arm, and Bharti-backed OneWebare broadly at the same stage. All still need security clearances before spectrum can be assigned. The ministry did not treat any one company as specially favoured or blocked. The dispute has a longer history. In earlier years Jio and Airtel argued that satellite spectrum should be auctioned like mobile airwaves; the government instead chose administrative allocation under the 2023 telecom law. Musk and the Indian operators have clashed over that point before, even after commercial distribution deals were discussed. Starlink has been seeking Indian approval for several years. On the same day, at the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani said Jio is making rapid progress on an end-to-end indigenous satellite broadband stack, aimed at extending home broadband quickly and matching or leading global technology. He declined to comment on Musk’s remarks and focused on connecting Indian homes. He also said work continues on the planned Jio Platforms public listing, which he hopes will draw strong domestic and global interest and could rank among India’s largest, while noting the IPO would be only the start of the next growth phase. Jio recently crossed 500 million subscribers.Social media reaction has split between users who treat Musk’s posts as an attack on Indian business interests and users who see Starlink as a threat to existing fibre and mobile networks in remote areas. The government position remains that the process is the same for all three satellite applicants.
